Hello, in
this short tutorial we will look at Martin Hannett’s
famous delay technique and its application to modern production using
Propellerhead Software’s Reason.
This
effect can strengthen and widen the sound of an instrument considerably.
However, it is seldom used today as people often find it easier to wire up a
reverb unit to create something similar, yet the resulting sound of this
process is often cleaner and more useful in the mix.
1. Start
Reason with an empty Rack and create a Mixer
14:2.

2. Hold SHIFT as you Right Click the Rack and
create a Malström Graintable Synthesizer.

An
unconnected Malström appears in the Rack.
As we are
now in the era of Reason 4, the Malström should default with the Vesper patch. If
you are using an older version of Reason, load any patch.

3. Hold SHIFT as you Right Click the Rack and create a DDL-1 Digital Delay Line.

An
unconnected DDL-1 appears in the Rack. This device copies the source signal and
then delays the copy by a specified time.

4. Press TAB to flip the Rack.
At the
back of the Rack, you can see that the Mixer 14:2 connects to the Hardware
Device. You also have a Malström for generating sound, and a DDL-1 for delaying
sound. Because you held SHIFT while creating the latter two devices, they
appear unconnected. Now it is time to do a little wiring.

The Malström has stereo outputs. These sockets send out the
synth’s audio data. One sends the left channel and the other sends the right.

The Mixer 14:2
has 14 stereo inputs. These sockets receive audio data, which can then be mixed
using the faders.
Normally
you would send the Malström’s left and right outputs to the left and right
inputs of one single stereo Mixer 14:2 channel. However, you are going to do
things a little differently here and make use of the delay unit.

5. Hold SHIFT as you Left Click Malström1 Main Output Socket Left and drag a cable to Mixer1 Channel1 Input Socket Left.

Now the
Malström’s left audio output routes to Mixer1 Channel1.
The DDL-1
has input and output sockets for a signal to pass through the device and be
treated accordingly.

6. Hold SHIFT as you Left Click Malström1 Main Output Socket Right and drag a cable to Delay1 Input Socket Left.

7. Hold SHIFT as you Left Click Delay1 Output Socket Right and drag a cable to Mixer1 Channel2 Input Socket Left.
