Trance Lead In Reason
Page 1
Here is a tutorial for creating a Trance
lead Combinator patch with Reason.
Setting Up
1. Start
the Reason program with an Empty Rack.

2. Right Click in the Rack and select Mixer 14:2
from the menu.

3. Right Click in the Rack again and create a Subtractor
Analogue Synthesizer.

4. Right Click in the Rack once more and create a second Subtractor Analogue Synthesizer.

Later, I
want you to add an automated filter sweep to this patch. Therefore, you will
hook up a Matrix Pattern Sequencer to Subtractor1’s Filter1 so it is ready.
5. Hold Shift while Right Clicking the Rack
and create a Matrix Pattern Sequencer.

Holding
Shift stops the Matrix being autowired.
6. Press
the TAB key on your computer
keyboard to flip the rack.
7. Connect
the Curve CV Output on the Matrix to Filter 1 Frequency Modulation Input on Subtractor1.

8. Press
the TAB key to flip the rack again.
9. Go to
the Edit Menu at the top of the
screen and choose Select All Devices.

10. Go to
the Edit Menu again and select Combine.

You should
now have two Subtractors, a Mixer and a Matrix. Subtractors1 and 2 route to
Mixer1 Channels1 and 2 respectively and all four devices are combined into the
Combinator like this...

Note messages
going to the Combinator will now trigger both Subtractors. I use two
Subtractors simply because two oscillators alone are not enough for this type
of synth. I need four.
It is
often easier to program synths while they are playing some kind of sequence, so
you are going to program in a little Trance motif and listen to it while you
work. This will help you better understand what is happening to the sound.
Looking at
the main sequencer window, you can see the Combinator Sequencer Track is
currently selected.

11. Switch
to Edit Mode and program this
sequence into the Combinator Sequencer
Track.

12. Switch
back to Arrange Mode, then set up
the Locators to loop the four bar
phrase.

13. Head
over to the Transport Panel and turn
on the Loop Function.

14. Now,
press Play on the Transport Panel.

You should
now hear the synth playing the little loop, sounds pretty awful doesn’t it.
Well, now you are going to crank up the Subtractors and create something a
little more usable.
