The Oscillators
When
synthesizing sounds the best place to start is usually the oscillators. An
oscillator is a very simple device that generates sound.
Now you
will set up the oscillators on these two Subtractors.
Concentrate
on the Oscillator Sections for Subtractors1 and 2. You will notice the devices
each have two oscillators. All oscillators are set up to generate sawtooth
waveforms. This type of waveform is good for subtractive synthesis and of
course for Trance. By default each Subtractor’s second oscillator is off, you
need it turned on.

15. Turn
on Oscillator2 for both Subtractor1 and Subtractor2.

Next, you are
going to change the Phase Differential a little. This function changes the
positioning of the waveform or ‘moves the cycle’s start point along a bit’. I
do not want to go into this too much here. However, in real terms what this
does for this particular synth is bring a little more ‘wobble’ into the tone.

16. Set
the Phase Differential for All Four Oscillators to 98.

The Octave
Selector shifts an oscillator’s pitch either up or
down in octave steps. Now you will change the octave for Subtractor2’s
Oscillator2.

17. Set Subtractor2 Oscillator2 Octave to 3.

You can
hear that brings some bass into the tone, while the other oscillators cover the
high end.
You need
to do some detuning here to get something good. Detuning oscillators from each other
is a sure fire way to get a more interesting sound, but you must be careful not
to detune too much and listen very carefully to the detune to be sure it is
correct.
The Semi
Selector shifts the oscillators pitch up or down in semitone steps.

18. Set Subtractor1 Oscillator2 Semi to 3.

19. Set Subtractor 2 Oscillator1 Semi to 7.

The Cent
Selectors detune the synth very slightly. They shift oscillator pitch up or
down in 100th of a semitone steps.

20. Set Subtractor1 Oscillator2 Cent to 28.
![]()
21. Set Subtractor2 Oscillator1 Cent to 28.
![]()
22. Set Subtractor2 Oscillator2 Cent to 28.

The Mix
Knob controls the mix between Oscillators1 and 2. Panning the knob hard left
allows you to hear Oscillator1 only, whilst panning the knob hard right allows
you to hear Oscillator2 only.
![]()
23. Set Subtractor2 Oscillator Mix to 51.
![]()
That takes
a little bass out of the patch.
In case
you missed anything, the Oscillator Section for Subtractor1 should look like
this...

...and the
Oscillator Section for Subtractor2 should look like this...
