Filters and Envelopes

Now its time to head for the Filter Section. The filters allow you to shape the sound of the oscillators by removing sections of the frequency spectrum.

13. Left Click the Dual button.

14. Left Click the Link button.

Now both filters are linked. Any changes made to one filter will affect the other in the same way (with the exception of the Pan Sliders, which work opposite to one another).

15. Left Click the Arrow next to the Type Field and select 12dB/Oct LPF.

Now both filters are set to low pass 12. Low pass filters are used for cutting the highs.

With the Cutoff Slider, you determine how much frequency you will allow through the filter.

16. Increase Cutoff to 18378.47Hz.

The Resonance Slider controls the amount of resonance applied to the filter. Adding resonance increases intensity in a synth tone.

17. Increase Filter Resonance to 5.15dB.

Now to move to the Envelope Section. Envelopes are time-based parameters that affect the sound of your synth.

Looking at the Envelope Selector, you can see the A Tab is selected. This means all changes made will affect the Amp Envelope. The Amp Envelope is most important because it affects how your synths volume changes over time.

The Att Slider controls attack time. Attack time is the time from the moment a note on message is received to the moment the envelope generator reaches a value of 1. In simple terms, it is the note fade-in time.

18. Set Amp Envelope Attack Time to a value of 0.01s.

Now the attack stage will last 0.01 of a second.

The Dec Slider controls decay time. Decay time is the time it takes the envelope to move from the slope level (coming after the attack stage and set with the SLL Slider) to the sustain level (set with the Sus Slider).

19. Set Amp Envelope Decay Time to 10.00s.

As stated, the Sus Slider controls sustain level. Sustain level is the volume that a note will rest at once the decay period is over. Put simply, this setting is how loud a held note will remain. Higher sustain levels result in more powerful sounding synths.

20. Set Amp Envelope Sustain Level to 100.00%.

The Rel Slider controls release time. Release time is the time it takes the envelope to drop to zero when a note off message is received. In other words, this slider controls the length of note fade out.

21. Reduce Amp Envelope Release Time to 0.01s.
